The French Bulldog is a small companion breed of dog. The name suggests that France is the country of origin, but, in fact, the Americans and British may have played a larger role in the breed’s development.
The French Bulldog is a gentle breed that typically has a pleased-go-lucky attitude. Like many other companion dog breeds they require close contact with humans. They have honestly minimal exercise needs, but do require at least daily walks. Their cool nature makes them brilliant choices for apartment dwellers, as does their usually sensible attitude towards barking. As a flat faced breed, it is essential that owners know that French Bulldogs cannot live outdoors. Their bulk and their compromised breathing system makes it impossible for them to regulate their temperature efficiently. In addition, Frenchies are top heavy and therefore have a hard time swimming. Precautions must be taken when exercising a Frenchie during hot or humid weather, as well.French Bulldogs can play too roughly for some smaller children, and should be monitored at all times during play. As well, children should be cautioned not to pick French Bulldogs up, as the dogs’ small size can mask how heavy they are.
French Bulldogs are essentially a bull and terrier breed, and as such, it is not surprising to learn that canine aggression can sometimes occur. Generally, this takes the form of same sex aggression. Owners considering adding a second dog to their household are usually cautioned to choose one of the opposite sex. Spaying or neutering can do much to curb aggressive tendencies before they start. The French Bulldog energy level can range from hyperactive and energetic to relaxed and laid back.
French bulldogs are a compact companion dog, active but not sporty. They are muscular dogs with a smooth coat, snub nose and solid bone structure. Their physical appearance is characterized by naturally occurring ‘bat ears’ that are wide at the base and rounded at the top. Their tails are naturally small, not cropped, and can be straight or screwed, but not curly.
HAH! I just got an 8 month ancient female about 6 weeks ago. She came from a highly reputable breeder but was only ‘pet’ quality so I did not pay as much (about half) of the ‘potential’ show quality puppies.
Bijou (aka Bean) is about 15 pounds of pure fun. She plays rough with my APBT and my daughter’s Golden. She is spunky, likes the cats, people, kids etc.
She makes us laugh. Chewing? She doesn’t chew on anything but sticks in the backyard and chew bones. Biting? Zero. Behavioral issues? None. House training? Hard.
She has times when she will use the dog door and then there are times she won’t. We are still working on that.
Keeping a Frenchie slim helps with the breathing. They do snore, grunt like a hamster, like to snuggle with you, follow you everywhere and fart a lot.
Every dog has its own unique personality. No matter what the breed. There are certain things about breeds that are prevalent but their personalities can be different.
They are small clowns with faces that looked like they ran into a brick wall. They are built sturdy and can take some serious play from an American Pit Bull Terrier. They like to be outdoors, run around like Greyhounds.
They have NO sense of ’self preservation’. Therefore because I live in Florida I have to watch her so she doesn’t bake herself to death while lying in the sun.
Life with a Frenchie is fun. Bean is wonderful.
