How do I clean a kitchen sink drain that has mildew inside the pipes?
I have a lot of black “gook” coming up on one side of my kitchen sink – it looks like mildew. I’ve tried pouring bleach down the drain and letting Soft Scrub sit inside the sink, but that didn’t do a thing. It’s progressively getting worse, yet it never clogs and I haven’t experienced problems with water draining. How do I get rid of this nasty stuff once and for all? (besides getting a new sink and new pipes – it’s not an option)

I’ve never heard of that but here is what I know. You have to be careful what you mix with bleach and vinegar and many other things. The combinations place out a toxic gas and who knows what else. I also know that Rid-X will not kill mildew. It is made to help dissolve soluable items in the septic tank only. Bleach usually kills mildew and if that doesn’t work, I can’t imagine what would. I use a 50/50 water and bleach to clean up any thing that even things it is going to grow. There are probably products to fix that. I would go to my friendly fix it store and question and then go to another and question and when I got the same answer at least twice, I would try that. Excellent luck.
That black stuff is called slug. To really get rid of slug you need to have the drain line cleaned by a plumber. The plumber must use a hydro jet to remove the slug. If you only have them snake the drain this will help but won’t get rid of it and you will soon have the same problem.
